Will the courts stop arms sales to Saudi Arabia?

Make Wealth History

In recent weeks we’ve seen the British government told by the courts to let Parliament vote on the process of leaving the EU – something that should have been obvious in a parliamentary democracy. This week they have been court over another issue that ought to be obvious: arms sales to Saudi Arabia.

Under the terms of the international Arms Trade Treaty, which Britain ratified in 2014, no state can authorise arms transfers to a country where they could be used “in the commission of genocide, crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, attacks directed against civilian objects or civilians protected as such, or other war crimes as defined by international agreements to which it is a Party.”

Saudi Arabia and its partners have repeatedly targeted civilians in Yemen, with several agencies proving that British-made bombs have been used. There was a story in the…

Winning or Not? Group Think

Group Think and Cybernats

“Groups affected by group think ignore alternatives and tend to take irrational actions that dehumanize other groups. A group is especially vulnerable to groupthink when its members are similar in background, when the group is insulated from outside opinions, and when there are no clear rules for decision making.”

The cause of Independence for Scotland is very much threatened, and it is threatened (amongst other things) by the very people who are the most vehement supporters. Many Independence activists function in a bubble where by they talk almost exclusively, at least about Independence, to other supporters. The bubble is also an echo chamber which means the same views are reflected back by others. This makes for a distorted view of how popular the Independence and Unionist positions are and also how strong the case against Independence might be. Further the echo chamber and bubble stifle debate…

This is not my normal post. This is not a normal day.

Disco Rodeo

When I started this, I began with a list of why today is bad. But we know why it’s bad.  We know the person who will be sworn in at noon EST today, and we know what he did to get there, and we know what we’re losing and what we could have had. And the campaign itself did damage to this country in ways we’re still learning.

But we’re still America. Still the United States. This country has faced bad times, divisive times, times we have done things for which we are ashamed. But, we survived them and as a country, and while we haven’t righted all the wrongs we could, or even, at times, come close, we have TRIED. We keep on trying, we keep on growing.

We are a nation founded on the idea, however imperfectly implemented, that we are all equal under the law, we are…

PART ONE

Every now and then, the world is gifted an important musician and artist in a profound way, an artist who inspires, stimulates and fascinates us.These unusual human beings seem to find ways of cutting through all the clutter and to somehow invigorate the mundane in our lives to exciting, new ways of seeing the world and the possibilities we have in it. Their messages speak to us in a way that we can hear and absorb, and it transforms us. Their words and music touches our souls and their courage, determination and successes can prompt us to follow our own dreams, whatever they may be. Invariably, they become our legends.

Some legends such as Frank Sinatra, Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, David Bowie and Prince whose music and magic live on, even…

Sudanese woman sentenced to death for her Christianity gives birth in prison

CNN Belief Blog

By Faith Karimiand Mohammed Osman, CNN

(CNN) — A Sudanese woman sentenced to die for refusing to renounce her Christianity has given birth to a girl in prison, her lawyers said Tuesday.

Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, delivered her baby Monday at a women’s prison in Khartoum, but her husband was not allowed to be present for the birth, sources told CNN. They asked not to be named for safety reasons.

Ibrahim was convicted of apostasy, or the renunciation of faith, about two weeks ago while she was eight months pregnant.

A Sudanese lawyer filed an appeal last week to reverse the verdict by the lower court.

She is in prison with her 20-month-old son, but Sudanese officials have said the toddler is free to leave any time, according to her lawyer, Mohamed Jar Elnabi.

Her husband, Daniel Wani, is a U.S. citizen who uses a wheelchair and “totally…
